    Looking Ahead

    Saturday, November 22, 2008, 01:55 AM [General]

With the year almost over, and a bunch of games just now gracing the shelves. It puts things into perspective, how far & fast 2008 has gone by us. Sure there's been ups & downs, but more positive changes..

    - more titles are receiving attention from new, fresh audiences
    - casual being more mainstream, there are still us longtime gamers branching out on a constant basis
    - online marketplace is always changing, offering  a variety of choices (including redesigned stores for both PSN & XBL)
    - plus titles that are on their way could be very promising

In a way, things are looking pretty good; yet let's see how this year wraps up.
So here's a question for you fellow reader..
Q: What were some positive things you've seen this year in gaming?
Q2: What are some negative things?

    SOY GAVIOTA HERIDA

    SOY GAVIOTA HERIDA

    Imposible alzar el vuelo
cuando se han rasgado las alas...

    Como gaviota herida
    apenas rozando el agua;
    halada por las olas,
    a merced de la corriente,
    perturbada por la espuma
    que salpica ponderando cálamos...
Así.. un sueño de amor naufraga,
    tendiéndose rendido
en la arena de la desesperanza,
    ahogado por la marea
    que condena a destierro...
cuando ha visto en su alba,
    temprano ocaso inesperado...

    RetroforceGO! Video Downloads

    Saturday, November 22, 2008, 01:38 AM [General]

I've been doing these videos of the RetroforceGO podcasts for awhile and I just wanted to post links so people can download the files to their computers or Ipods or whatever.  They are .mp4 format so almost anything will play them.  Especially since some of the longer videos have to be compressed weird for GameTrailers to accept them into the system and they are too big for capcom's uploads.  As you can probably tell there isn't too much of an order as I'm basically doing the newer episodes and doing some of the older ones as I go along.  Also, be sure to check out the RetroforceGO website for new podcasts since doing these videos for them takes a while.  Its age gated since there is some language that may be harmful to some (not a lot...but some).

    Put up the Barricades

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 07:35 AM GMT [General]

Britain has turned into an Iceland and a third of them want to leave. Time to put up the barricades and keep them out. We don't need cheap English plumbers thank you very much, with the Poles the pipes don't leak.

"One third of Icelanders now want to emigrate, things have got so bad, a recent survey found. The proportion of Britons with similar wanderlust may not be so different before this economic agony passes."

    FUNDRAISER: PLEASE HELP MERILYN!!

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 02:02 AM EST [General]

Merilyn, a 3 year old German Shepherd/Chow Mix (picture attached), was involved in a tragic accident a few months ago with a lawn mower, and needs your help to pay his vet bills!

Initially the costs for surgery to save his leg, and ultimately his life, were very high, and the ongoing care continues with costs every couple of weeks until he regains his health. The damage was extensive: he severed his sciatic nerve & Achilles tendon, and shattered the bone in his foot. They fused the severed nerve and tendon, but he has no use of the foot since the bone was shattered.

We are glad to report that he is responding beautifully to treatment, and although a complete recovery is highly unlikely, the vet insures us that he will be able to get around and be a loving pet for many, many years to come.

However, there is still a balance and more expenses as the next few months unfold. "Mom" and "Dad" would appreciate any help you could give them towards Merilyn’s recovery.

    IP: "Freely"

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 12:41 AM CST [General]

    by Ian Punnett

"The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning."

That is the first line of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, “Casino Royale,” published back in 1953.

I was reminded of that the other night when I was watching the most recent and the best of the three versions of “Casino Royale” starring Daniel Craig as James Bond 6.0 who just nails it as far as I’m concerned.

On paper, the casting didn’t work for me because I couldn’t get Daniel Craig as the pyscho killer from “Road to Perdition” out of my head.

The second I saw the first trailer, I got it.

Same thing with Robert Downey, Jr as Tony Starke in “Iron Man.”  Had to shake my head when I first heard the announcement but from the second the movie trailer for “Iron Man” graced my laptop, I was hooked.

On the other hand, I’m not so sure about this new “Star Trek” trailer I keep seeing.  Ay, I love the franchise and want to see it continue forever but I’m not sure I’m ready for James T. Kirk, Spock and McCoy as teenagers.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bs39zVqots

And I know that it’s a J.J. Abrams production and I’ve really enjoyed much of his work on Lost, Cloverfield and even MI3.

But from what I have seen so far, Star Trek XI really does look like “Star Trek 90120.”

I will reserve final judgement only because it has Simon Pegg in it as Scotty and I love him in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” to name a few.

William Shatner has commented on the new casting in “Star Trek XI” and if you haven’t seen that yet, here it is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fu656gGkhI

Speaking of remakes, have you heard this story?

A kitten with two faces that meows out of both mouths at the same time was born Wednesday near Perth, Western Australia.

The kitten was delivered in a vet's operating room after its mother had complications with the birth.

The two-faced feline was one of three in a litter and appears to be doing well.

It hasn't got a name yet, but the owner is thinking of calling it Quasi Modo.

Now, that’s just wrong.  To name the cat “Quasimodo” after the unloved title character in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” just seems mean.

If we’re going to make movie references, how about calling the cat “Harvey” in honor of Harvey Dent, aka “Two-Face,” from the Batman comics.

Or, better yet, just call the critter “Kitty Kitty.”  That way when you call it you can just say, “Here, Kitty Kitty.”

    In other movie inspired Crypto-News:

The latest milestone in the quest for a Harry Potter-like invisibility cloak has been reached: a way of bending the geometry of space so that light from all directions travels around an object, rather than hitting it.

Unable to interact with light, the hidden object is therefore invisible, a new study found.

But how real is the possibility of an invisibility device? Is it years, decades, or millennia away? Even the author of the latest study doesn't want to hazard too strong a guess.

Also, in the ongoing fight against pirates,

Gone are the swashbuckling days of repelling pirates with cutlasses -- a British firm is spearheading use of a high-tech "sonic laser" to beat bandits on the high seas.

About the size of a domestic satellite dish, LRADs blast the target with a precise beam of sound -- warning messages, noises, sirens -- which can be turned up to excruciatingly painful levels should an attacker get too close.

"You'll be in absolute agony," company chief executive Nick Davis, a 38-year-old ex-army man.

"It's very effective up to 1,000 metres and excruciating if you get within 100 to 200 metres if it's at full power. It would give you more or less permanent hearing damage."  (Physorg.com)

I know this makes me some kind of geezer but this excruciating sonic blast reminds of the old cartoon character “Peter Potamus.”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foPcgr4javU&feature=related

I wish I could find some footage of Peter’s legendary “Hippo Hurricane Holler” to show the youngsters.  Peter Potamus didn’t need some jive Long Range Audio Device to blast pirates out of the water!

As of last report, those Somali pirates still have their own oil tanker with a $100 million dollar cargo and are demanding $25 million ransom.

Maybe the Saudi owners of the tanker won’t mind so much if drives the price of oil up!

Right now in the Upper Midwest, gas prices are already some of the lowest in the country.

    http://www.twincitiesgasprices.com/

I have personally talked with people who have paid $1.49 a gallon but the price might not have lasted long.

If it’s true, it’s almost worth it to drive here and gas up!

    Cool Movie Short

Saturday, November 22, 2008, 06:40 AM GMT [Film]

Before you watch it (and I hope you do) one additional little fillip to add to your enjoyment:  the music right for the closing credits is Blondie's "Lookin for a Hero."

That was the theme song for a TV series about a group of gorgeous American secret agents (you could still have American good guys) who went around doing their secret agent things using the cover story that they were fashion models (this was before "Baywatch," when they dispensed with plot altogether).

They also had a HUNK.  One John Eric Hexum.  One look at this guy and you knew that if he ever had any kind of dealings with any of these women it would be to share grooming tips.  But I digress.  The show was a lot of fun, and I loved the pilot, but then one day ol' Johnnie-boy was clowning around and picked up a prop gun loaded with blanks, put it to his temple, and voila!  Brain stew.  That was the end of "Cover Up." Weird.

Still like the theme song.  Makes me want to go be heroic.

Here's the movie.  Worth the time.  Really.
