About Me
Well I was born in the 1960's when there was alot of change going on. Most Memorably the Black Panther Party (Power to the People!) This was when people of all different races were unified and worked together to change the system. When I was born my father was working for K.D.I.A. radio station. I was his first child and I hung out with my father all the time. I lived at the station and went with him to tape the gospel service for the station on sundays and rode around in his car while he would chase all kinds of news stories in his car, where he would broadcast live the local news. This was a time when so much was going on. I would be late to school when he drove sometimes because he had scanners in the car and he would hear something going on and drag me along. I loved it though! I thought I wanted to be a female boxer at that time, since Muhammad Ali was my hero at the time. My Mother didn't like the idea too much. My father was worknig for K.S.O.L. and K.S.F.O and a station called K.W.E.B. So, I basically grew up at the radio stations. My father also worked as a freelance photographer for the A.P. and U.P.I. News wires. He was broadcasting the news and also suppling the shots to the news wires. He taught he how to shoot, develop and print photos. Early on I thought I wanted to be a dj and so, I mentioned it to my pops and he took me over to K.S.F.O. and the station let me read a commercial on the air, I remember the man saying that I had a husky voice and that he thought I would do well if I really tried. this was around the high school years and it was also the time when disco was it! I lived for the weekends because I would either be dancing or going to concerts. I've attended so many concerts. from when hip-hop first began until now. I remember all the era's my most memorable were grand master flash and the furious five, p-funk allstars, cameo, brick, dazz band, etc.. If there was a concert in town I was there. After graduation high school, I was still undecided in what field I was going into so I just applied for a job at Pacific Bell and managed to stay there for 12 1/2 years. I was a Project Manager in the Marketing Information Systems department. I figured it would pay for the concerts and film. During the 12 1/2 years while at Pacific Bell I would go to many clubs and concerts. This is where I met Alex Mejia a schoolmate of my sisters. He was working at The Waterfront Cafe in Alameda at the time. I would go to the club every weekend to support Alex and I always told him that he was good enough to make it to the top. He ended up landing a spot on the weekend mix shows and then he worked at Immages Cafe where Renel and Rick Chase and Evan Luck etc.. were hosting concerts. Alex knew that I took photos and was able to pull be in as the club photographer. Around that time he was also working for All City Records and was helpoing a group called Flynamic. He asked me to do their promo photo. I was very excited since I was going to be able to shoot, develop and print the photos. I took Flynamic to the railroad tracks in Oakland where there is alot of graffiti. Shoot and develop the film and Alex picked out which ones that they wanted. I printed them and gave them to Alex. Soon afterwards He told me the good news that they had got signed but that they were going to have to change their name to King Tech and Sway. Not too long afterwards they landed the Syndicated show called "The Wake Up Show" which is still being broadcast nationwide. This was the New Jack Swing Era and KMEL started their annual Summer Jam Concerts. I owe Alex so much as he helped me get a spot to shoot the event and as a thankyou I would produce a collage of the event and give it to him to give to the station. This went on for several years and probably was the most memmorable time in my life. Around 1995 my Mother passed away and things just seemed to change for me. I really fell out of touch with everything. In 1997 I met my husband Ruben who helped pull me out of the depression that I was in and He and I had opened up a body shop. It was fun but... I was missing something in my life (The scene that I was born into).
This is when I met up with Special One of the Conscious Daughters. I told her about my life and we had so many things in common. Her mother worked for K.D.I.A. as well and there were so many similarities in our stories. She helped me to see that it wasn't too late and that I should still persue Music.
Next thing... Ruben my husband get's deported to Mexico. I couldn't let him go by his self. So I went to Mexcio where he had no family and it was an adventure to say the least. We ended up in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco Mexcio. I thought to myself..How will I ever get back into the scene?? I'm in Mexico! Well I started to notice that the kids were into Hip-Hop and they would ride around with beat booming out of their cars like over in the states. I would see alot of them sporting Tupac Tee's. Not to mention that alot of people were getting deported who were from here. I checked out the club scene but they didn't have many events going on as far as hip-hop was concerned. So I thought to myself.. If I gotta be here then I'll have to bring Hip-Hop to Mexico. So I went around getting signatures from the kids, Met with the Mayor, Club Owners, etc.. Got a Myspace and searched for artists who would be willing to come to play in Puerto Vallarta. I was in Mexico the past year settnig this up and since them came to California to handle some unfinished business and to also look for groups to promote in Mexico. I'll be headed back to Mexico at the end of December to meet with the Club Owners and will be booking my first events. I'm really excited. I've worked really hard and I can't wait to get back there!
